A man sat at a metro station in  Washington   DC and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning.. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that thousands of people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

(한남자가 워싱톤 디씨의 한 지하철역에 앉았습니다 그리고는 바이올린을 연주하기 시작하였습니다.  때는 추운 정월 아침이었고.. 그남자는 45분동안 6곡의 바하의 음악들을 연주 하였습니다. 연주를 하는동안 마침 러쉬아워여서 수천명의 인파가 출근을 하기위하여 그 지하철역을 지나 갔었습니다.)

Three minutes went by and a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried up to meet his schedule.

(삼분이 지나갔고 한 중년 남자가 이음악가가 연주 하는것을 보았습니다. 그는 가던 발걸음을 천천히 하다가 몇초간 있다가는 곧 다시 그의 스케줄에 맞추기 위해서 발걸음을 재촉하며 그곳을 떠나 갔습니다.)

A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping continued to walk.

(일분후에 바이올리니스트는 처음으로 일불의 팁을 받았습니다: 한 부인이 멈추지 않고 걸어가면서 던져준 돈이었습니다)

A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work.

(수분후에 어떤남자가 그의 음악을 듣기위해 벽에 몸을 기대었지만 시계를 보더디 곧 다시 걷기 시작했습니다. 직장에 늦은것이 확실해 보였습니다.)

The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother tagged him along, hurried but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.

(가장 관심을 가졌던 사람은 한 세살먹은 어린남자 아이였습니다. 그아이의 엄마는 다시 아이를 재촉 하였지만 그아이는 걸음을 멈추며 그 바이올리니스트를 바라보았습니다.  마침내 엄마가 그아이를 세차게 밀었고 그아이는 걷는 내내 뒤를 돌아 보았습니다.  이러한 행동은 다른 어린 아이들에게서도 반복 되어졌습니다. 모든 부모들은 예외없이 그아이들을 억지로 데리고 갔습니다.) 

In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

(이 연주자가 45분동안 연주를 하는동안 여섯명만이 잠시나마 걸음을 멈추고 있었고, 약 20명 정도가 돈을 주었지만 가던발걸음을 멈추지는 않었습니다.  그는 32불을 벌었습니다. 그가 연주를 끝내고 정적이 흘렀지만 아무도 그사실을 알아채는 이들은 없었습니다.  박수도 없었거니와 아무도 인정을 해주는사람이 없었습니다.)

No one knew this but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written with a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.

(아무도 이런 사실을 몰랐지만 그 바이올리니스트는 세계적으로 가장 유명한 연주자의 한사람인 쟈슈와 벨 이었습니다. 그는 삼백 오십만달러나 하는 바이올린으로 바하의 가장 어려운곡들 중에서 몇곡을 연주 하였습니다.)

Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston and the seats average $100.00 each.

(쟈슈와 벨은 이지하철역에서 연주하기 바로 이틀전에 한자리에 평균 백불정도하는 좌석들이 있는 보스톤의 한극장에서 매진된 공연을 하였습니다.)

This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and priorities of people. The outlines were: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour: Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected context?

(이것은 실화 입니다. 쟈슈와 벨이 그지하철역에서 연주하게 된것은 사람들의 인식, 취향 그리고 순위에 대한 사회적 실험의 일환으로써 워싱톤 포스트지가 기획한것 이었습니다. 요약하면 : 일반적인 환경에서 부적절한 시간에 : 우리는 아름다움을 인식합니까? 우리는 하던것을 멈추고 그것을 감사합니까 ? 우리는 뜻밖의 상황에서 그러한 재능을 알아볼 수 있나요?)

One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing some of the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing....?

(이실험으로 유추해서 알수있는 결론중의 하나는:

만일 우리가 세계에서 가장 유명한 연주가중의 한사람이 지금까지 작곡된 가장 유명한 음악들을 연주하는 것을 잠깐이나마 멈추고 들을 여유가 없다며는 얼마나 많은 다른것들을 모르고 살고 있겠습니까...?)
